Graffiti has a tremendously negative impact on a community. In lowers property values and identifies an area as one in which the crime rate is probably higher. While many point to the rise in popularity of graffiti canvas art prints as a barometer that shows its rise in popularity, most graffiti is just tagging and non-sensical markings. There are those who consider people who damage a building with graffiti as creative and even describe them as graffiti artists, when they are actually vandals who are destroying property that does not belong to them. Once graffiti appears in a community, it is very difficult to remove it and to keep it from reappearing. Gangs like to promote their identity by spraying buildings with their gang names and signs. Often, competing gangs will they mark over the original graffiti and the cycle of destruction continues. The business owner whose building sprayed with graffiti loses business, as people are afraid to patronize a building that is marked with spray paint. There is nothing positive about graffiti and vandals who are caught should be forced to remove it as part of their sentence that is imposed by the court.
